The Licensing Process

There are two steps to obtaining a license from the Gibraltar Commission. The first is handled by the Licensing Authority, a body which decides whether to issue the remote license to prospective operators or not. If the answer is positive, the post-licensing process is handled by the Gambling Commission.

Any casino can apply for Gibraltar’s gambling license, but the requirements are pretty strict. Unlike the Curacao license, which can be obtained by most casinos, the Gibraltar Commission’s application process depends on the provided documentation as well as several other factors. Online casinos applying for the remote license will have their reputation, experience, technical infrastructure, and financial position and business plan checked before the governing body decides whether to issue the license.

The application process may take anywhere between 2 to 6 months depending on the size and scope of the operator. As soon as the license is issued, the licensee must follow strict rules regarding the advertising on their website. For example, the ads must be accurate and targeted at adults, and they should never link to sites with immoral content. Failure to do so will result in the operator losing its license, which is issued for 5 years.

Additionally, all of Gibraltar’s licensees need to ensure their games and services are fair. The Gambling Commission has a list of approved test agencies licensees can use including eCOGRA, iTestLabs, TriSigma BV, and GLI Europe.
