It was designed to work with even stake bets, which is why it’s perfect for roulette, where bets such as High/Low, Odd/Even or Red/Black are common.

The LaBouchere system was named after its inventor Henry LaBouchere, a wealthy English aristocrat from the XIX century who loved playing roulette. LaBouchere was well-known for his betting system which now carries his name and which he used on roulette in all the casinos he played.

The LaBouchere system is not so simple as the Martingale or Fibonacci systems. It’s far more complex. So if you’re looking for a system that you can use without taking notes or reading guides, it’s not for you. Additionally, it can be quite confusing for beginners. How Does The LaBouchere System Work?

As we already mentioned, the system was designed to work on even money bets. This means that you can use it on outside roulette bets such as High/Low, Odd/Even or Red/Black. Don’t even think about using it on inside bets. The chances of winning these bets is not even close to 50:50, so the math simply won’t work.

Before you start using the system, you first need to write down how much money you want to win. The next step is to separate that amount in smaller figures. For example, if you’re planning on winning $10, separate it in a sequence such as 1-1-1-2-2-2-1. You can separate the whole amount in any way you like. Your first bet will be a combination of the first and last numbers in the sequence, in this case, $2.

If you win, cross the numbers you just used in the sequence. This should leave you with 1-1-2-2-2. Repeat the process for the next step. If you follow this sequence, your next bet will be $3. Should you manage to win, cross out the numbers you just used, and continue following the sequence and process until all the numbers are crossed.

At this point, you’ve won your desired amount and you can either walk out of the casino happy or start a new sequence.

In case you lose, you add the money staked to the end of the sequence. For example, if you lost your first bet which was $2 in the aforementioned sequence. y\You add 2 to the end of the list and don’t cross out any numbers. After each loss, you repeat the process and continue following the strategy until all the numbers are crossed out.

As you can see, the LaBouchere system is pretty simple once you learn how it works. Not as simple as Martingale, but it’s a lot more fun. The problem with it is that the sequence can get quite long if you get into a losing streak.

Still, by following the string of numbers and stick to the steps in the process, you will strike out all the numbers on the list until you’re left with a single one. Stake that amount and you’ll be closer to your goal of winning the money you had in mind.

Variations

To make things a bit more difficult for you, but more interesting, there are also variations within the Labouchere system. These ensure that you can implement the system to perfection for yourself. What variations are there within the LaBouchere system?

Thanks to fact that it’s highly flexible, the LaBouchere system allows interesting modifications which can give you a chance to get to the finish line and win the money you’ve set as a goal initially. The Johnson progression is a much safer alternative from the original strategy. As you’re probably aware by now, if you plan on winning a higher amount of money, your sequence can go really long quite fast, and if you get into a losing streak, things can go south pretty quickly.

In order to mitigate this, the Johnson progression keeps things safe by following a sequence like this: 0-0-0-0-0-0-0-0-0-1. As you can see, your initial bet is $1, and your next bet is the same, no matter if you win or lose. It’s a pretty safe betting system that can be quite interesting for beginners.

If you manage to hit a losing streak, the sequence can get pretty long quickly and it will be much harder to win. In case of a long sequence with pretty big numbers, what you can do is split the sequence into 2 or 3 smaller ones.

For example, if your sequence looks like this 10-15-20-25-30-35-40-45 which accounts to $220, you can split this up in 2 or 3 smaller sequences in any way you like. In this way, you can reach your goal easier without having to risk a lot of money to cross out all the numbers on your list.

As the name suggests, this variation involves increasing the bets and crossing out the numbers from the list when you lose. With this system, you can keep the lost money to a minimum and you can win great amounts if you happen to hit a win streak. However, due to the house edge, this isn’t something that will happen often.

As a negative progression system, the LaBouchere strategy is quite fun when you understand how it works.
