March to Victory in the Legion Gold Series by Play’n GO

When Legion Gold first came out, we had no idea that Play’n GO was laying the groundwork for a series. It was an entertaining, simple game set during the height of the Roman empire. Its success led the studio to make more follow-ups, which saw the Romans march across Egypt and the Mediterranean. Now, with the release of Legion Gold Victory, the army is on the move once more.

To celebrate the series, we thought revisiting each game from oldest to newest would be fun. Keep reading, and you may find your new favourite title.

Legion Gold

Set during Rome’s glory days, Legion Gold lets players experience the city in all its splendour. Beautiful buildings surround the main square, where soldiers gather in preparation to march. Symbol designs mix playing card royals with animals the Romans used in battle. This would stay consistent between games, even as the backdrop changes.

Legion Gold keeps to a relatively simple gameplay loop. It uses a 5×3 grid with 25 paylines and two features: Gold Re-spins and Mega Free Spins. The former requires you to land six gold coins, each with an attached multiplier. This causes re-spins to play until no more coins appear or the reels are completely filled.

Mega Free Spins activate when three Scatters stop on the reels. A giant 3×3 symbol appears during the feature and moves between spins, increasing your chances of winning. The top prize is 2,000x your bet.

Legion Gold Unleashed

The next game featuring the fearless legionnaires is Legion Gold Unleashed. The backdrop is immediately different. Instead of enjoying the beauty of Rome, the army made a trip across the Mediterranean to fight in North Africa. Once again, icons are a mix of playing card royals and animals. This time, the Romans are using local wildlife, like crocodiles and elephants.

Play’n GO’s release comes with a 5×3 playing area and 25 paylines. Mega Free Spins returns from Legion Gold with no significant changes. Meanwhile, Gold Re-spins have a new addition called the Coin Bag. When it appears, it collects the prizes of all gold coins on the reels. This gives you better odds of getting the 3,000x jackpot.

Legion Gold and the Sphinx of Dead

With all other territories pacified, the Romans turned their attention to another powerful rival: Egypt. Legion Gold and the Sphinx of Dead introduces the ever-popular ancient Egyptian theme to the series. This results in one of the most visually impressive games made by this team. The distant pyramids, a Roman helmet sitting forgotten in the sands, and shrubs that bend with the wind look drop-dead gorgeous.

However, we were a bit disappointed that this release had no gameplay additions. It has the same 5-reel, 3-row layout, 25 paylines, and features we saw in Legion Gold Unleashed. Even the 3,000x top prize is the same.

Legion Gold Victory

Legion Gold Victory had a tall task ahead of it. Following up on the previous title is no easy feat. The team would have to make a game that’s just as eye-catching while improving on the gameplay formula. How did they do?

We join the legion during a siege of a cool fortified city with circular stone walls. This is the most visually interesting part of the intro that plays when you launch the game. For some reason, Play’n GO decides to hide it behind its reels. That’s not to say the rest of the visuals are bad. Seeing the soldiers prepared for battle is cool, but it’s a step down from Legion Gold and the Sphinx of Dead.

The gameplay side of things hasn’t changed much. The game uses a 5×3 grid with 25 fixed paylines, just like before. However, the team made minor changes to the features and math model that may interest some players.

You need six or more golden coins to activate the Gold Re-spins. Each coin comes with an attached prize, which can be collected early if a Coin Bag appears. Alternatively, you get the rewards when the re-spins feature ends.

The new addition to this formula is the Victory Gold bonus. Gold coins that land on the reels but don’t activate Gold Re-spins or the Coin Bag are added to the pile on top of the reels. Each time this happens, you can win up to 100x your stake.

The Mega Free Spins feature remains the same. You need three Scatters to trigger it, after which a Mega symbol will appear on the reels. It moves left or right between spins.

Finally, Wilds can show up as Expanding Wilds, appearing stacked and covering multiple positions. This contrasts previous Legion Gold games, where Wilds could only be a 1×1 icon.

You can win up to 4,000x your stake in this game, which is an improvement over prior releases. Play’n GO’s release also features a 96.30% RTP and a medium variance.
