Exclusive to European and French Roulette Tables

As we have pointed out in our previous articles, European Roulette is more favourable to the player than its American counterpart. It is mainly due to a lower house edge which sits at 2.7% whereas in American Roulette it is 5.26% because of two zeros. Besides that, European Roulette allows you to play neighbour bets.

What Is a Neighbour Bet?

A neighbour bet is any bet placed on five numbers. It works like this: you choose your lucky number, and the two numbers on either side will be included in the bet. There is a difference between how you play this bet online, and that’s where a racetrack comes into play. When playing a neighbour bet at a land-based casino, you need to announce it to the dealer. That’s the reason why these bets are also known as call bets.

At online Roulette, you simply choose one of the numbers on the racetrack and four numbers next to it will be covered by the wager. There is no restriction to the numbers you can cover with a neighbour bet. What you should bear in mind is that it will be considered as five straight up wagers, so only one of these numbers can be the winning one. Also, to calculate how much you can wager as a minimum, you must know the table limits. If it is €1, for instance, you must place a €5 neighbour bet at least.

What About Section Bets?

The French terms you see within the racetrack refer to so-called section bets. These are also neighbour bets, but instead of covering a group of five adjacent numbers, they cover certain sections of the betting layout. Section bets include:

  • Orphelins

Orphelins is a bet that that covers eight numbers and requires five units. The numbers include 1, 6/9 split, 14/17 split, 17/20 split and 31/34 split with one unit covering each of them. You can win up to 35:1 on this bet.

  • Voisins du Zero

Also known as the neighbours of zero, this section bet covers 17 numbers with nine units. The 0, 2, 3 corner is covered by two units, and the same amount is placed on the 25 to 29 corner while 4/7 split, 12/15 split, 18/21 split, 19/22 split, 19/22 split and 32/35 split are covered by one unit each. A maximum payout is 17:1.

  • Tiers du Cylindre

Tiers du Cylindre covers a series of two numbers including the 5/8 split, 10/11 split, 13/16 split, 23/24 split, 27/30 split and 33/36 split. That’s 12 numbers in a total you can bet on with a 6-unit wager and win up to 17:1.

Closing Thoughts

It may take time to get to know neighbour and section bets, but they are fun to play. Bear in mind that they don’t have the same probability of winning, so if you want to play the least risky option, choose Voisins du Zero with the likelihood of winning at 45.9%. The one that is least likely to win is Orphelins with the probability of 24.3%. If you want to give these additional bets a try, make sure to understand how they work first.

Keep an Eye on Your Bankroll

When playing Roulette, one may get easily overwhelmed by all the betting options on offer. That can lead them to excessive spending, which can drain their bankroll.

To make the most of online Roulette, make sure to set your limits and risk within them, especially if you go for bets that require more than one unit.
