We’re going to be transparent from the get-go. We don’t like classic slots. Our love of these games only came about with the popularization of the five reel model and its limitless potential.

Each release was different than the last, offering new bonuses or different gameplay to keep players engaged. In contrast, classic slots are boring, plain, and often without any special features. And that’s exactly the category Triple Diamond falls under, making it a rare IGT game we immediately didn’t like.

Triple Diamond Slot Review

This release is played on a three reel board, where each reel is exactly three symbols high. There are a total of 9 flexible paylines, which means online gamblers can turn them on or off at their leisure. This allows them to lower their total bet past what the slot usually permits, but it does come with an obvious downside. Namely, for each payline you turn off, your odds of winning also decrease. This is even more obvious when you only have three reels instead of five, so we advise against using it.

Players can win by collecting three matching icons in adjacent positions, starting with the leftmost reel. All wins must follow one of the currently active paylines, or else the attached cash prize will not be awarded. This is true for all symbols except for Wilds. Wilds will pay even if there’s just one or two present on the playing field.

There’s only one special feature available in Triple Diamond, and that is the Wild and its multiplier! Wilds are able to substitute for any icon on the board, increasing your odds of completing winning combinations. If one or two Wilds are part of a win, they will increase the awarded cash prize by 3x or 9x, respectively. Very lucrative under the right circumstances!

Theme & Symbols

For us to dislike the theme, there has to actually be a theme to dislike. If you really stretch it, you could argue that copying a physical machine is a theme. It certainly has the boxy appearance and the eye-murdering colors right, if nothing else. This isn’t the dream slot you saw in a land-based casino once, won big, and were never able to find again. This is the dingy game in the back of your local betting den that keeps players coming back while awarding nothing.

There’s also no real background image to speak of. The bright pink lines and the black background could technically count. If they do, then it’s one of the worst things IGT seems to have made. Maybe someone finds this attractive. There’s billions of people out there, one of them probably thinks this looks nice. But this background just makes our eyes hurt. Honestly, it wouldn’t be nearly as bad if they just swapped the pink for a more neutral color. Less likely to make your eyes bleed is all we’re asking for.

And unlike Cleopatra, there’s no great symbol design to save this release! Because Triple Diamond is a classic slot, it has to use the same, generic icons its predecessors did. We have long since accepted we’re not the target audience for these types of nostalgia bait games. So if you like bars, lucky sevens and coins, you’ll probably like this IGT release. The real question is how long that affection will last, when you see nothing but bars over and over again.

How to Play Triple Diamond

Triple Diamond is played on a 3×3 board with 9 flexible paylines. Flexible, as in, you can turn some of them on or off to lower your total bet! Many developers nowadays will not allow you to touch the number of active paylines. It’s not difficult to see why, either. Turning off some paylines means you’re lowering your odds of winning. As reviewers, we’re usually pushing for the best customer experience possible. But we’re on the side of the companies on this one. Flexible paylines aren’t exciting or particularly useful.

Developers have made up for the loss of flexible paylines in multiple ways. The most obvious is the inclusion of more special features in each slot. We’d gladly lose access to the flexible paylines if it meant we get more bonuses. As it stands, the Wild and Wild multiplier are the only special feature currently available to gamblers. It’s lucrative, don’t get us wrong. But it doesn’t create engaging gameplay – it just happens randomly, and there’s no input from the player.

And if that wasn’t enough, we also have to deal with coins only again in this game. We already voiced our annoyance with this in Cleopatra, so we’re just going to give you the short version. Coin only makes sense for land-based casino releases. Not so much for Triple Diamond and other online slots, where you don’t know the value of an individual coin. Either swap to cash only, or tell us the value of each coin. Your total jackpot is worth 1199x your total stake, granted for a three-of-a-kind Wild win.

Bonus Features

There’s only one special feature available to gamblers, and that’s the Wild and Wild multiplier.

  • Wild and Wild Multiplier
  • Wilds are able to substitute in a winning combination for absolutely any symbol. Bars or lucky sevens, doesn’t matter! Furthermore, when a Wild replaces another icon as part of a winning combination, it also grants a multiplier! One or two Wilds in a win increase the total prize by 3x or 9x, respectively.

Summary

This is a classic slot like you see them in landbased casinos. If you like simple and easy slots, this one will suit you. We didn’t like this game. Part of that is due to the fact we’re not its target audience. But there are things, like the low RTP, that should make any player careful before they start this IGT release.

The Positives!

  • Your jackpot, worth 1199x your total stake, is awesome compared to the slot’s medium variance. It’s about the only positive thing we can say about Triple Diamond.
  • It’s just like you’re playing in a landbased casino, same old slot, same old prices. Classic!

The Negatives..

  • The graphics aren’t just outdated, they’re bad. The background image hurts our eyes, and is in serious need of a redesign. Icon designs leave a lot to be desired, as well. The slot looks like it’s been hastily assembled together. There’s no polish that we see in other IGT games.
  • Having few special features is a staple of older releases. We don’t like it, but we can usually stomach it. But only one bonus is too little, even for us. It’s made even worse by the small playing field, which doesn’t lend itself to engaging gameplay without special features.
  • With an RTP of 95.06%, Triple Diamond is below the current industry average. The number of slots we’d recommend playing despite their high house edge is quite low. And this game is absolutely not one of them.

Do yourself a favor and skip this IGT release. If you’re hungry for a good classic slot, there are lots of better options on the market.
