Cat allergies are the least of your worries with these feisty felines! IGT doesn’t toy around when they pick the mascot for their slots.

They went straight for the big cats: the lynx, lions and tigers. So if you were hoping for something relaxed, you’re out of luck. This game is wild, both in graphics and available bonuses!

Cats Slot Review

You play this release on a five reel board, where each reel is three symbols high. There are a total of thirty paylines, which you can turn on and off at will! This allows you to fine-tune your total bet, which we quite appreciate. To win, simply collect three or more identical icons in adjacent positions, starting with the leftmost reel. All winning combinations must follow one of the active paylines, or they won’t count.

There are two special features available to players! The first is that some symbols can appear doubled up. These icons will count as if there are two symbols occupying a single reel, allowing for ten-of-a-kind wins! The other bonus are free spins, with no additional modifiers. All in all, very basic, just what we’d expect from a 2012 slot.

Theme & Symbols

Cats is all about.. cats. We know, shocking! Still, we do appreciate IGT going for the more exotic type of felines! Nothing against house cats, but they just can’t compare to a majestic lion. One is undeniably cooler than the other, after all. But it’s not just lions occupying the reels! You’ll also find lynxes, cheetahs, tigers and panthers all waiting for their turn in the spotlight.

The background image shows off a sprawling African savannah. Although you’ll have to use your imagination for the sprawling part. The picture is quite zoomed in, and is mostly obscured by the massive reels. Not surprising, given its initial design was for a physical machine. What we see does look promising, but sadly, the game can’t shake its age. It simply cannot compete with modern releases.

We already mentioned the kind of ferocious kitty cats you’ll run into if you play Cats. And while we’d like to say that all the icons look as cool, they sadly don’t. You have playing card royals, which do absolutely nothing to fit into the theme. They’re plain, colorful filler symbols. Nothing more, nothing less.

How to Play Cats

The slot is played on a 5×3 reel with 30 flexible paylines. It’s been ages since we played a game that allowed us to turn those on and off! As such, it took some getting used to before we could get started.

IGT’s release doesn’t let you see how much in cold, hard cash you’re betting. Not a problem for a physical machine where you know how much you spent. Big one for a digital release where you have to keep checking your online balance to find out.

There are only two special features. We like them, but we do wish there was something more to Cats. This combination of bonuses has been done several times now. This slot offers nothing new in comparison. At the very least, its medium variance means it won’t take long until one of the special features is triggered. If you were looking for something simple and plain to play, then you’ll love this game.

Your minimum stake, assuming you keep all paylines active, is €0.30 per spin. However, you can bring that down all the way to €0.01 per spin! Of course, you’ll only be playing with only one payline, but the option is still there. IGT considers online gamblers smart enough to make that decision for themselves. Your maximum bet is capped at €300 for each spin.

Bonus Features

Back in 2012, these special features were spectacular. Even if they’ve been used before, Cats was a land-based slot. And with those, you didn’t have much of a choice but to play what was given. Something that has, thankfully, been alleviated via online betting.

  • Double Symbols
  • All cat icons have a chance of appearing as a double symbol. This means two cats will occupy the same reel position instead of just one. This isn’t just a visual effect, either! A payline will count that position as two icons, so you could earn yourself a ten-of-a-kind win. In fact, you’ll have to if you plan on winning anything good.

  • Free Spins
  • Collect five or six Scatters on the second, third and fourth reel to win five or ten free spins, respectively. Collecting additional Scatters can earn you more bonus turns. However, there’s no other mechanic to free spins. No multipliers or enhanced wins. Just regular free spins.

Cats Slot Payouts

The slot has a medium volatility and a jackpot worth €250,000. The game has an RTP ranging between 93.04% and 94.93%. The whole range falls way below the current industry average of 96%!

IGT’s release is a product of its time. It was awesome when it came out – but that is several years at this point! Sadly, it simply cannot compete with what iGaming giants are putting forward these days.

The Positives!

  • The theme is still quite cool. Big cats are criminally underused in slots, and Cats does its part to rectify that.
  • For its volatility, a €250,000 jackpot is quite good!

The Negatives..

  • You can tell the graphics were originally designed for a physical machine. They don’t look bad, but they certainly don’t look good either.
  • The RTP is just bad. Other developers were putting forward slots with a 96% RTP even in 2012! IGT has no excuse on this front.
  • This combination of special features has been done to death at this point.

Unless you’re looking to relive some nostalgia, we’d recommend playing something a little newer. If you’re looking to win big, how about Dead or Alive 2 and its insane jackpot prize?
