Any slot that has you fighting a massive, destructive “kraken” is a good one in our eyes! Well, thematically, at least. Ever since the TV show Vikings, our favorite Norse raiders seem to be everywhere.

We’re not complaining in the slightest, mind you! Especially when the awesome folks at Yggdrasil Gaming decided to take their stab at it. What we got was a fantastic game, worth every cent we spent on it.

Vikings Go Wild Slot Review

Vikings Go Wild is played on a five reel board, where each reel is four symbols tall. There are a total of twenty-five paylines that cannot be turned on or off at will. To win, collect three or more identical icons in consecutive positions, starting with the leftmost reel. Winning combinations only count if they follow one of twenty-five active paylines.

Yggdrasil’s release offers multiple special features which draw the player in with the promise of a fun time and big wins. There’s a free spins round in which you fight off a kraken, and all Viking symbols can become sticky Wilds. Then, there’s a Treasure chest that can grant more free spins, a cash prize, or even a Wild Reel bonus. Which, as the name implies, turns one of the reels completely Wild!

Theme & Symbols

We really like this slot’s theme. Adventures and exploring the unknown are popular tropes for a reason. And when you get to do it with a bunch of rowdy bad-asses like a band of Vikings? Any trip becomes one hundred times better by default! Yggdrasil’s gorgeous graphics also help immerse you into its world. It’s obvious the developer put a lot of effort into this game’s visuals.

The background image shows that simple can still look good. There’s the edges of the ship on either side of the reels. A gray, cloud covered sky. And an expansive sea as far as the eye can see, waves shifting and smashing against the boat. We could think of a few improvements, but they’d just be icing on an already delicious cake.

One thing that could have been done a bit better are the icons. Symbols are split into two categories. There’s the lower value coins, and the high value Viking icons! Now, this is supposed to be an expedition to find some treasure, so the coins make sense. But they don’t really make for thrilling symbols. The Vikings are a lot better in that regard! They look just as dangerous and smug as you’d expect a band of raiders to be.

How to Play Vikings Go Wild

Yggdrasil’s release is played on a 5×3 board with 25 fixed paylines. The volatility is either high, or medium-high with a heavy lean towards the latter. Vikings Go Wild can be very shy with its wins, requiring a lot of spins before it opens up. But once the Norse deities grant their blessing, you’ll be drowned… in awesome prizes, that is!

Having multiple special features makes the high variance a lot more bearable. Free spins are the most valuable, but also the most difficult to trigger. Considering it has a chance to create multiple Wild Vikings on the reels with each spin? We can understand why! So when you combine it and the Treasure Chest, you can score some really satisfying cash prizes.

Like in other slots made by this developer, you change your total bet by adjusting your coin value. This allows gamblers to wager as little as €0.25, or as much as €100 every spin. We really like this betting spread: it appeals to both casual players and high rollers. That said, we’re not sure we’d recommend this game to casual gamblers. Its high volatility can be quite cutthroat.

Bonus Features

We’ve already said it, but it bears repeating. We really like these special features! None of them are something completely new. But they mix things up in a satisfying and lucrative manner. It also helps that you can use one to trigger the other, allowing for a chain reaction of bonuses and big wins!

• Free Spins

A kraken seizes control of the ship, and Vikings have to fight it off! Each time a Viking icon lands, it will battle the kraken. If it wins the battle, that Viking will become a sticky Wild, remaining on the reels until the special feature ends. It’s also possible to win the Treasure Chest bonus during free spins.

• Treasure Chest

This symbol only appears on the fifth reel, and can do so both during normal gameplay and free spins. Depending on when you open it, it can grant different special features. In the base game, it gives players between eight to twelve free spins, or a cash prize. If free spins are already active, it adds two to four extra turns, a cash prize, or the Wild Reel bonus.
