Based on the hit 2002 song from American rock band Electric Six, Big Time Gaming developed the slot Danger High Voltage. The flashing lights of a disco form the backdrop to the reels. You’ll see glitter balls, bells and tacos.
Danger High Voltage! is played on 6 reels and 4 rows, which is a larger than average board. The game uses the Ways to Win system over regular paylines. We quite like this – it makes it much simpler to check if you have a winning combination or not. As a result, the only conditions for winning are for three or more matching icons to be in consecutive reels.
The gameplay can offer some fantastic variety when it wants to. Full reel Wilds are fantastic, but there is also a chance they can come with a 6x multiplier. Having a choice between two different free spins is also something we appreciate. Gamblers can pick between less free spins and sticky Wilds, or more free spins and high voltage Wilds instead.
Your total bet is set up as if there are a total of 20 fixed paylines, instead of 4096 ways to win. As a result, your minimum wager starts at €0.20, which is fantastic value for money. Serious players who want to bet big are capped at €40. We imagine high rollers won’t be too pleased, but it is great for casual and mid-range gamblers.
About Danger High Voltage!
There are many things we like about modern slots. They are a massive improvement over their land-based counterparts both visually and in gameplay. Without the hardware restrictions of those bulky machines, software providers can often go wild to deliver a fantastic experience. But one thing we like most of all is the sense of ‘what will they release next?’
The answer, it seems, is Danger High Voltage, a game released in 2017 inspired by a song from 2002. Big Time Gaming’s release is played on a large 6-reel, 4-row board with 4096 ways to win! Instead of following fixed paylines, players only had to connect three or more identical symbols in adjacent positions. These icons had to start at the leftmost reel. Danger High Voltage Gameplay There are some fantastic special features available for your enjoyment! Full reel Wilds with multipliers, two types of free spins, sticky Wilds, and high voltage Wilds are all available. The slot revels in its various Wilds. To gain access to sticky or high voltage Wilds, you have to trigger free spins and choose the appropriate bonus.
Theme & Symbols
The theme being all about a song was something we did not expect! We have to give credit to the developers for originality, if nothing else. We remember this song being everywhere back when it came out. It even snuck its way into the Charlie’s Angels movies, believe it or not!
These visuals are hardly what we would consider fantastic. You have some moving lights, and the feeling of a massive stage is there. But everything else feels phoned in. You only see a mass of strobe lights changing colours every second or two. You cannot see the stage itself, or even hear the song playing, which is quite the shame.
Symbols are a mixed bag for us. The ones with unique artwork are clearly references to the lyrics. Golden bell and the taco for ‘Fire at the Taco Bell’, and a disco ball for ‘Fire at the Disco’. The Scatter even has the words ‘My Desire’ written on it as another throwback. We’re not sure about what’s going on with the gem filled skull, beyond Big Time Gaming’s love for precious gemstones.
So while that’s good, you also have the far less inspired playing card royals on the reels. Furthermore, there is a distinct absence of any cool animations that play after you land a win.
Bonus Features
The available bonuses are hardly the most complicated you will see in your life. However, they do have the potential for some life changing wins!
Full Reel Wilds
Wilds cover the entirety of their reel, and come in two flavours. The first are fire Wilds, and they behave exactly like a regular Wild does. Meanwhile, electric Wilds come with a built-in 6x multiplier, immediately increasing the value of any prize! Both fire and electric Wilds can only appear on reels two, three, four and five.
Free Spins
Collect three or more Scatters to win High Voltage or Gates of Hell free spins. The name choice is mostly to reference song lyrics, and has little to do with the offered bonuses.
Gates of Hell
A total of seven extra turns are granted. One of the icons is randomly chosen to become a sticky Wild for the duration of free spins. The symbol will only transform into the sticky Wild on the second, third, fourth and fifth reel. Each time one reel has four sticky Wilds present, three more free spins are played.
High Voltage
Fifteen free spins are awarded at the beginning. High Voltage Wilds have a chance of appearing on the second, third, fourth and fifth reel. They come with a multiplier that can range between 11x to 66x. When the High Voltage Wild participates in a win, that multiplier is applied to the prize the player won. Landing three more Scatters rewards fifteen extra turns.
Danger High Voltage Payouts
This Big Time Gaming release has an incredibly high volatility. So much so that we feel the need to warn players on casino sites what they are getting into. Make sure to top off before you jump into Danger: High Voltage, or you may find yourself penniless.
That said, the high variance does bring the promise of a win worth over 20,000x your total bet! The RTP for this slot is 95.67%, which is below the current industry average.
After spending a bit of time with the game, we found that we liked it – but did not love it. It is a great pastime, but can it really surpass the very best slots?
The Positives
Some symbols being references to song lyrics was a nice touch on Big Time Gaming’s end.
Special features and jackpot are mouth-wateringly good! Free spins, insane Wild multipliers? Keep them coming!
Allowing players to select what free spins bonus they want to play from the start is always a plus in our book.
The Negatives
The visuals are passable, if somewhat bland. We were hoping for a little more effort beyond the lightshow.
High volatility will make it inaccessible to some online gamblers.
RTP is below current industry average.
Our final verdict would be no. If you want something new to play, it can certainly occupy you for hours on end. The prizes it offers are also very tempting, and create the need for ‘one more spin’. But the below average RTP and high volatility are usually not a good combo.
