If there was ever a theme synonymous with video slots, ancient Egypt would probably be it. It has decorated more games than we can count, and it somehow remains popular despite how much it was used.

And this StakeLogic release goes all out to bring it to life! If you’ve always wondered what life was like in this long forgotten civilization, now’s your chance to find out!

Book of Anubis Slot Review

Book of Anubis is played on a five reel board, where each reel is three symbols tall. There are a total of ten paylines which players cannot turn on or off at will. To win, collect three or more identical icons in adjacent positions, starting with the leftmost reel. All wins must follow one of the currently active paylines, or the cash prize won’t be awarded to the gambler.

Available special features should be immediately familiar to Novomatic fans. Wilds and Scatters have been combined into a single book symbol. Finding three of these Wild-Scatter icons on the reels awards ten free spins with an expanding symbol bonus. This expanding icon will cover the entire reel when there are three or more of it present on the board. But what’s most important is that expanding symbols have Scatter pays!

Theme & Symbols

Yes, ancient Egypt has been done to death. But as a theme, it grew gradually. We only see a few slots use it every year. It helps keep it widespread, without swiftly burning players out. That’s the difference between this theme and the oriental Chinese one. When that market was opened up to foreign developers, everyone and their mother made a game with a Chinese theme. It didn’t help they all looked the same, too.

Of course, that’s not something anyone playing this StakeLogic release has to worry about. The developer has a nasty habit of making bland looking slots from time to time, like Random Runner and Club 2000. But Book of Anubis looks amazing! The background image is this massive, sprawling building, complete with a lot of decorations! You can even see people and camels walking beneath the reels.

The cool visuals extend to icon design, too. On the reels, you will find symbols of Anubis, a pharaoh’s sarcophagus, a bird hieroglyph and a flying scarab. There are also playing card royals: 10, J, Q, K and A, stylized to fit the ancient Egyptian theme. A large book with an ankh on it is both the Wild and Scatter icon.

How to Play Book of Anubis

StakeLogic’s release is played on a 5×3 board with 10 paylines which cannot be turned on or off. Book of Anubis has a medium-high volatility, and a jackpot worth 730.5x your total stake. Of course, getting anywhere close to that number will require the free spins special feature. And while we’d usually complain about that being the only bonus, it works out here. With no other special features, the developers have to make it appear more frequently than they otherwise would.

Does that mean we’re completely in love? Well, we would be, if it wasn’t an idea borrowed from Novomatic’s Book of Ra. Now, StakeLogic isn’t the first to copy this slot and its special feature, and we doubt they will be the last. But when other developers make their clones, they usually have the common sense to add their own spin to things. But this game makes no real improvement over the original bonus, apart from a slightly better RTP. Emphasis on slightly.

Changing your total bet remains a simple affair with this software provider! Tap the Total Bet button, which allows you to adjust coin value and bet per payline. By tweaking these two numbers, you also adjust your total bet! Casual online gamblers will be happy to hear they only need to pay €0.10 if they want to try this release! Meanwhile, high rollers get a satisfying €50 maximum bet.

Bonus Features

  • Free Spins
  • When three or more Wild-Scatter symbols are collected in any position, they award ten free spins with expanding icons. It is possible to re-trigger this special feature, and win ten more extra turns! To do this, simply collect three or more Wild-Scatters while the free spins are already being played.

  • Expanding Symbols
  • During extra turns, one icon from the paytable is randomly selected. This symbol becomes the expanding icon, covering the entire reel when it will lead to a win. These expanding symbols are subject to Scatter pay rules. So long as you have enough expanding icons, they will pay regardless of position. This greatly increases your odds of winning the jackpot!

Book of Anubis Payouts

Summary

The exchange of ideas in the iGaming industry is nothing new. Just like every software provider wanted their own Gonzo’s Quest or Starburst, so too do they want their own Book of Ra. We don’t have a problem with that. Our issue is when nothing new is added, and the mechanics are shamelessly stolen with no changes. StakeLogic’s release is even bolder, taking the ancient Egypt theme of the original, too!

The Positives!

  • Having said that, there’s no denying StakeLogic blew Novomatic’s original slot out of the water when it comes to graphics. This is what we mean by adding something new. Better visuals will attract players that might have otherwise skipped Book of Ra. And boy, did the developers deliver on this front!
  • We also can’t deny that they do offer a better RTP. The improvement is miniscule, mind you. Compare it to Amatic’s Diamond Monkey, which has the same mechanics, but offers a 97.49% RTP instead! Still, an upgrade is an upgrade, even if it could be better.

The Negatives…

  • There’s really no getting around Book of Anubis being a clone. This is the type of annoying stain that will never wash out. The annoying part is that StakeLogic didn’t even try to make any meaningful mechanical changes to the special feature. Even an extra bonus would be enough to divert our annoyance.

We can’t officially endorse this slot, but it does fill a niche Novomatic left open. If you’re hungering for Book of Ra’s gameplay with prettier visuals, then this StakeLogic release is perfect for you.
