When we’re talking about martial artists, you don’t get more popular than Bruce Lee. Which is why he’s starring in WMS’ slot, showing off his moves and awesome special features! Read OG24’s review to uncover this game’s secrets.
You don’t need amazing graphics to create something stylish. Cool design can often make up for an absence of fluid animations. It’s also more memorable: those types of slots stick around in your head for longer.
One look at the playing field will tell you that’s exactly what WMS was trying to go for. But does this game succeed in doing so, or does it stumble and flop?
Bruce Lee Slot Review
Bruce Lee is played on a five reel board. The first two reels are two symbols tall, while the other three are four icons high. This is a unique layout, which sports 60 flexible paylines that can be turned on or off. To win, collect three or more identical symbols in adjacent positions, starting with the leftmost reel. All wins must follow one of the active paylines, or else the cash prize won’t be awarded to the player.
What about special features, then? This release only uses free spins, but leverages its unique layout to trigger it in three different ways. The first two methods are unique, while the third combines the first two. It is more difficult to land, but it gives more extra turns compared to the other two methods. That, and it also sports an expanding Wild which you don’t see anywhere else.
Theme & Symbols
We really like the way WMS handled the Asian theme in this slot. The bamboo trees and a single, red lantern in the upper left corner are nice touches. Most of your focus will be on the reels themselves, where you’ll find a large number of cool icons. It’s not the best looking game we’ve ever played, but it certainly gets the job done.
The background image is really well done. It captures the oriental look without seeming obnoxious. The crimson color looks quite cool, as do all the drawings that are either a shade lighter or darker. Using different shades of a single color isn’t something we see often. So, despite being simple, it still looks quite stylish! Especially when you add the lantern and the bamboo trees sitting off to the side. Bruce Lee Gameplay Now, we’ll admit, we’re not the biggest fans of Bruce Lee’s movies. So we may be missing something when it comes to the symbols, but they look quite basic to us. Various Chinese weapons, traditional icons like coins on a string and scrolls, and several takes on everyone’s favorite martial artist! One of the Bruce symbols is the Wild, while the red chest is the Scatter.
How to Play Bruce Lee
You play this slot on a 2-2-4-4-4 board with 60 flexible paylines. It has a medium variance, with a top prize worth 800x your total stake. Of course, to actually get that jackpot, you have to get a five-of-a-kind Wild win. And the effort you have to put in compared to the reward you get? It’s not always worth it! Unless you’ve got free spins active at the same time, chasing after Wilds is a very costly affair.
That’s something that could be relieved using special features. But it does seem like WMS intentionally kept the number of available bonusesin this game limited. It’s all about free spins in Bruce Lee, whether you love it or loathe it. Personally, we like to have more special features, but we can get behind having just one or two if they’re good. So does this release qualify for that prestigious ranking?
Choosing your wager is just as painful as it was in Wizard of Oz. You can only adjust the number of active paylines and coin value by clicking the plus and minus keys. And it’ll take you forever to go from minimum bet to maximum bet. That said, you do have plenty of stakes between the €0.30 minimum and the €60 maximum bet!
Bonus Features
If you want a slot that has a lot of special features, you’ve chosen the wrong game. Bruce Lee lets you trigger its one bonus in multiple ways, and rewards you more for doing it in the most difficult way. But, at the end of the day, there isn’t any kind of gameplay variety. It’s free spins all the way down.
Free Spins
There are three different methods to trigger this special feature. Depending on how you activate it, gamblers get a different number of free spins.
Method One
If the first two reels and rows are covered by four matching icons, players get five free spins. The first two reels are held in place, and landing three more Scatters grants five more extra turns.
Method Two
Score three Scatters on the third, fourth and fifth reel to win five free spins. A single expanded Wild lands on one of those reels, turning it completely Wild. A single Wild also appears on the first two reels in random positions with each spin.
Method Three
This version is activated when you get the activation for both the first and second method at the same time. This earns you twenty free spins, during which the first two reels are held, and an expanding Wilds appears on the third, fourth and fifth reel. A single Wild will also appear and overlay on top of the first two reels.
Payouts
Bruce Lee has a medium variance with a jackpot worth 800x your total stake. The slot’s RTP is 96.05%, which is above the current industry average.
Thre’s no getting around free spins in this game. We like all the extra bonuses that come attached with them. But having three different ways to trigger the special feature doesn’t quite sit well with us. That said, it does have its advantages and disadvantages, which we’ll cover below.
The Positives!
Having three ways to activate free spins means it’s that much easier to actually win the bonus! The more frequently you hit the special feature, the better your odds of winning big are.
This WMS release also looks quite stylish! The background image has absolutely won us over. Symbols are a bit less impressive, but they’re better than playing card royals.
The layout this slot uses is quite unique! We always commend innovation, and we do think the developers should try new things with this reel setup.
The Negatives..
At the same time, three ways of landing free spins means it’s that much more difficult to win the one you want. The 20 extra turn bonus is very difficult to land. We can’t tell you how many times we came close to winning it, but missed it by one Scatter or one icon.
We also wish there was a bit more diversity in special features. Yes, free spins are fun. But we want something to break up the monotony in between.
Don’t get us wrong, Bruce Lee is far from perfect. But it’s still one of our favorite WMS games! If you like free spins and medium variance, then we wholeheartedly recommend it. Give it a try, and embrace the dragon!
