These Casinos Offer The Best Bonuses

We were never big fans of children stories being transformed into slots. So when this game first launched in 2010, we ended up skipping over it. We wouldn’t try it until much later, when we heard some really glowing praise for this release.

And boy, did we miss out! We tried it out later, and had a blast playing it! However, this was a few years ago. How does it hold up nowadays?

Wizard of Oz Slot Review

Wizard of Oz is played on a five reel board, where each reel is three symbols tall. Players have access to a total of thirty paylines, which can be turned on or off at will. To win, collect three or more identical icons in adjacent positions, starting with the leftmost reel. All wins must follow one of the active paylines, or else the cash prize won’t be granted to the gambler.

There’s quite a few special features available in this slot! Glinda will occasionally fly around, turning up to four reels Wild, creating some awesome wins. And if you collect three Emerald City Scatters, you can win cash prizes, a free spins round, or a pick and click. The Road to Emerald City pick and click is hands down our favorite. And we promise it’s totally not because it’s the one that can award the jackpot!

Theme & Symbols

You know, they say time isn’t kind to anyone, but some people get particularly affected. If this game was a person, they’d definitely fall into that category. Everything is just so basic, there’s really nothing to talk about. The background is simple, the icons are rudimentary. Compared to other releases we reviewed, this one is below average.

Does a solid block of one color count as a background image? We get this is supposed to be the sky, but we’re not impressed. Just drawing one cloud on a light blue background feels lazy on WMS’ part.

What about symbols, then? They’re exactly what you’re expecting them to be. One thing we can praise the developers for is not adding playing card royals. All icons are completely unique, and fit the Wizard of Oz story. Sadly, these symbols have aged horribly. Everything’s blurry when zoomed in, which we have to dock points for.

How to Play Wizard of Oz

The slot is played on a 5×3 board with 30 flexible paylines. It has a medium variance, with a top prize worth 1500x your total bet. It’s a good jackpot, but one that’s exclusively available from special features. If you’re hoping for a decent win outside of bonuses, it is possible. But it’s so much more difficult to pull off, we’re not sure if it’s worth your time.

So what kind of special features can you expect? There’s a decent variety of them, which we were quite pleased with. Every now and then, Glinda flies about and floods the reels with Wilds. There’s a free spins round that has a chance to add extra Wilds. And if you’re tired of all the Wilds, you can take a trip with the Road to Emerald City. It’s a relaxing pick and click with some awesome wins!

Choosing your total bet can be a bit of a slog using WMS’ old user interface. It allows you to adjust the number of active paylines and your coin value. And since there are a lot of different coin values, it can take a while to find the one you want. Players can wager between €0.01 as a minimum, or €150 as a maximum with each spin.

As we already mentioned, there’s a fair number of bonuses in this game. Choosing our favorite was quite difficult – but in the end, the Road to Emerald City prevailed.

  • Glinda Good Witch
  • This special feature activates randomly. Glinda flies across the reels, filling up to four reels with Wilds. And unless you’re really unlucky, this is a guaranteed big win!

  • Oz Pick
  • Collect three Emerald City Scatters to trigger this bonus. Click one of the symbols to win a cash prize up to 10x, free spins or the Road to Emerald City.

  • Free Spins
  • Gamblers start with eight free spins. If you land the Winged Monkey Wild Feature icon on the third reel, extra Wilds are added on the board. Furthermore, landing extra Scatters on the first, third and fifth reel at the same time wins extra free spins!

  • Road to Emerald City
  • Pick from a large heap of emeralds to win cash prizes, a character, or to go directly to Emerald City. Picking a character takes you to a separate screen, where players have to find a gold charm. Gold charms will either reveal the character, or return you to the Yellow Brick Road.

Finding the character allows you to use them once you reach the Emerald City by finding the associated icon. If you found no characters, you pick one of four golden charms to discover a character or a final cash prize. Try and find Dorothy if you can. She’s the only one who can earn you the top prize of this release.

Summary

It’s not often that we can very clearly draw a line between things we like and things we dislike. Games in an online casino are usually a bit more complex than that, and one thing draws on another. If we were back in 2010, we’d probably be praising this release like no other. But as it stands, it does have some flaws.

The Positives!

  • Gameplay is still absolutely stellar. The variance and special features are perfectly balanced to create something engaging and lucrative.
  • Road to Emerald City remains one of our favorite pick-and-click bonuses to this day. There’s so much depth to the whole thing! You can find characters and unlock them for a later stage. Then, depending on your character, the total win you can collect also changes.

The Negatives

  • We’d probably like the graphics a lot more if they weren’t so old. The background is too simple for our liking, and the blurry symbols certainly don’t help Wizard of Oz’s case.

We’d still recommend playing this slot… if you don’t mind the dated visuals. But if you need awesome graphics to enjoy a game, then you’ll want to skip this one.
