Among Britain’s greatest heroes lies the name of Horatio Nelson. And while he’s not too famous outside of the UK’s shores, his strategy and fearlessness led to many naval victories.

After a string of successful battles, he made the ultimate sacrifice, and died while securing victory at Trafalgar. His quote that “England expects that every man will do his duty” is a quote this day, as a result. And today, this hero receives the highest honors of all: his very own slot!

Admiral Nelson is played on a five-reel board, where each reel is three symbols tall. There’s a total of ten paylines, which players can turn on and off at will. While it does help in lowering costs, if you need it, you pay the price in other ways. Each payline you turn off lowers your chances of winning. Collect three or more identical icons in adjacent positions to win, starting with the leftmost reel. All wins must follow one of the currently active paylines, or their cash prize won’t be granted.

Special features are a bit too simple for our tastes, even if they can create some satisfying prizes. The heroic admiral is the Wild, while the ship’s cannons are Scatters. And just being in Horatio’s presence is enough to make those cannons pay out double their usual cash prize! There are also three ship bonus symbols, used to activate and re-trigger free spins. During free spins, the ship also acts as a temporarily Wild.

Theme & Symbols

We really like the chosen theme here. It’s not often that more obscure historical figures get a chance in the spotlight. We’re sure some of you right now are thinking to yourselves: really, reviewer? Horatio Nelson isn’t a recognizable figure? He is… in Britain. Most people outside of the United Kingdom haven’t heard of him. Hopefully, the game will inspire them to take a look and learn what an absolute legend he was!

The developers went out of their way to create a cool background image, which shows off multiple ships. Likely a recreation of the Battle of Trafalgar, for which the admiral is most known for. Unfortunately, this Amatic release then flubs it in two ways. First, they hide it behind a non-transparent reel, which means you can’t see most of it. And second, they add this weird blue filter that drowns out all the details!

Icon designs are a mixture of playing card royals and actually unique symbols. You’ll find a gorgeous blonde, an elaborately designed anchor, and a silver compass as icons with unique artwork. Meanwhile, playing card royals include J, Q, K and A, written in a more old-timey script to make them fit in a little better. Admiral Nelson plays the part of the Wild, and the most valuable symbol, with cannon Scatters and ship bonus icons.

How to Play Admiral Nelson

This slot is played on a 5×3 board with 10 flexible paylines, which you can turn on and off at will. The top prize for joining the admiral’s fleet is a stunning 5000x your total bet! Scoring that win is incredibly difficult, however. To do so, you’ll need a full screen of Wilds, which requires some outright insane luck! Fortunately for gamblers, second best is just as satisfying, and a bit easier to win.

Special features usually make or break a game. They dictate how likely you are to score a big win, but also how fun each release usually is. There are players who play nothing but low volatility slots, and do so because they’re fun. Admiral Nelson is the exact opposite of that. There’s little in the way of raw fun factor, apart from landing big wins. But those are few and far between, leaving you to grind hard for each bonus.
