The mythology of ancient Egypt is honestly incredibly fascinating. The stories of its many Gods are numerous, and almost as famous as their Greek counterparts! They are but one more mysterious, alluring aspect of a civilisation that always tickled our imaginations. The Egypt of today is a vastly different place, so curious players will have to seek answers in the Book of Gods!
Book of Gods Review
This slot was released in 2018, and allows online gamblers to return to the glory days of this ancient civilisation. It is played on a standard 5-reel, 3-row board, with 243 ways to win. The game chooses to forgo traditional paylines in favour of a much superior system, in our eyes. Instead of having to keep track of where certain lines go or do not, you only have to make sure symbols are adjacent to each other.
Available special features include icon cloning, free spins, and feature drop. During normal gameplay, only minor symbols can be cloned. However, when free spins start, only high value god icons can be cloned, increasing your odds of winning big. Finally, for impatient players, there is the Feature Drop special feature, where you can pay some money to skip the grind.
Theme & Symbols
Ancient Egypt is a theme we love coming back to. There is just something alluring about this civilisation lost to the sands of time. Their pyramids, the vast temples, the hieroglyphs! So many mysteries that scientists and researchers keep trying to figure out to this day. It just goes to show no civilisation or empire lasts forever. Even ones that lasted for thousands of years!
We were quite impressed how such a small effect managed to make Book of Gods look this good. You will notice most of the elements are entirely static, except for the water surface. The way it moves and shimmers is gorgeous, and the artists even added reflections. Add the book flicking to a new page with each spin, and you have a gorgeous slot on your hands! Available symbols are split into two categories. Cool, Egyptian deities, and boring playing card icons. Apparently, there are only four gods in this book! Bastet, Ra, Osiris and Neith all make an appearance, granting their blessings to the luckiest gamblers. The richly decorated book is both a Wild and a Scatter, all rolled into one symbol.
How to Play
This Big Time Gaming release is played on five reels and three rows. Since there are no MegaWays in this game, players do not have to worry about changing heights. The slot uses the Ways to Win system, so you do not have to worry about following some arbitrary line. Instead, pays are granted for connecting three or more identical icons in consecutive reels, from left to right only.
Most games by this developer tend to be light on gameplay outside of special features. Fortunately, Book of Gods circumvents that issue somewhat, thanks to symbol cloning. By itself, it is not enough to land any huge wins, but it does help break up the monotony. Getting familiar with it now is helpful, since it is also used during free spins!
You will quickly learn that the slot behaves as if it only has ten paylines available. That means your minimum wager is a minuscule €0.10 per spin, which is fantastic value for money! Your maximum bet only goes up to €40 per spin, however. Great news for casual and mid-range gamblers, less so for high rollers.
The special features in this Big Time Gaming release are easy to comprehend. Still, we will explain them in-depth for you, so there is no confusion what-so-ever!
During normal gameplay, one of the playing card symbols is randomly chosen to be the cloning icon. You will know which one was selected by the symbol that appears in the book. The icon will expand, and cover the entire reel it occupies, only after all other wins are paid. These expanded symbols act like Scatters – they pay from any position from left to right. The icon changes on every spin.
Collect three, four or five Wild/Scatter symbols to win fifteen, twenty or twenty-five free spins. Collecting three or more golden book Wild/Scatters retriggers the bonus, granting more free spins. When this special feature starts, the icon cloning bonus changes. Instead of highlighting playing card symbols, it reveals a God icon. Furthermore, the book does not display any new symbols after that. However, if you succeed in reactivating the special feature, it will display another God icon in the book. Retriggering four times allows all four deities to become cloning symbols.
This mechanic works the same like in previous Big Time Gaming releases. Instead of having to wait to activate free spins, you can pay 80x your total bet to buy the bonus instead. The developers did make some minor changes to Feature Drop, however. Now, golden coin icons reduce the feature price by half of your total stake, instead of having a fixed value. This incentivises players to try out bigger wagers, and rewards high rollers who stick with Book of Gods.
The game has a medium-high variance, with a maximum win worth 4860x your total bet. Not the most impressive jackpot the developer has offered, but the volatility is also far more subdued as a result. The RTP for this slot is 96.35%, which is above current industry average.
After playing so many super volatile games, this Big Time Gaming release felt like a breath of fresh air. Even without that, Book of Gods brings quite a few good things to the table.
The background image and the water effect look gorgeous. We can only hope all of their slots will look as impressive!
Numerous special features to keep you interested. They also appear more frequently, which keeps gameplay interesting.
The RTP is above current industry average, which is always a plus.
Playing card symbols continue to be dull and unimaginative.
Can be difficult to get good wins outside of special features.
Personally, we had a blast playing it, and can easily recommend it to anyone who’s looking for something less volatile. You will still be subject to some grinding from time to time, but it is not nearly as bad as in Bonanza.
