Donuts was released in 2018, and is a game about.. well, donuts! They seem to be an American phenomenon for the most part, as we rarely see any here in Europe. The slot is played on a four-reel, four-row board with 2401 Ways to Win. It seems like Big Time Gaming have decided to shed boring, regular paylines, and we could not be happier.

Special features can sound a bit complicated at first, but become immediately clear after playing them once. You have donut boxes that can reveal Wilds with multipliers and multiple donut symbols. There are also free spins, and a special bonus round played before them that determines the active multiplier during extra turns.

Theme & Symbols

There is not much to say about this theme. It is really all about donuts. No innuendos, no hidden meanings – just regular old pastries with sweet glazing on top. Some of them even have quite impressive décor! We would have appreciated some animations to bring the slot to life. The only thing we really get are the clouds slowly coasting by. Not bad, but not great either.

The rest of the graphics give a real sense of central United States. A vast swathe of nothingness, with mountains and desert as far as they eye can see. Then a well maintained road cutting through all the dust and empty space, leading to a massive donut joint. And judging by the number of parked cars, the fact they are stuck in the middle of nowhere is not hurting business any!

Icons are split into yummy donuts and boring playing card symbols. The boxes can also reveal multiple donuts, which is great for value, less so for your waistline! It seems like we are not the only ones on diet here, either. Big Time Gaming also limited their temptations, and chose to forgo precious gemstones in this game! Sure, they added a golden donut to make up for it, but progress is progress!

How to Play Donuts

Donuts is played on four reels and four rows. It uses regular ways to win instead of Megaways, so the height of each reel remains the same every spin. In fact, there are a total of 2401 ways to win. Pays are granted by connecting three or more identical symbols in consecutive reels, starting from the leftmost one.

Outside of special features, Big Time Gaming’s release doesn’t have much in the way of interesting gameplay. You will mostly be staring at the same square playing field, occasionally netting a small win here and there. It is mostly a test of patience and how deep your wallet is before the slot opens up.

The game sets it wager in increments of five, which is fantastic for the lower-end spectrum of players. You can bet as little as €0.05, and still be eligible to net an insanely high jackpot. By contrast, the maximum wager only goes up to €10 per spin. We imagine this will be a turn off for several high rollers. But you can still land some amazing wins, despite the low maximum bet.

Bonus Features

Online gamblers hoping to win big will have to make good use of the special features available in Donuts. They can seem complicated at first, but are actually quite simple.

• Boxes

When a donut box appears on the reels, it can show you one of two things. It can reveal up to four donuts in the box, or a Wild with a multiplier between 2x to 4x.

• Bonus Round

When you trigger free spins, you are taken to a separate playing field. Here, only golden Scatters and blank spaces can land. You start with three spins, each one bringing the counter down. However, the counter resets back to three each time a new golden Scatter lands on the reels.

Your end goal is to land as many golden Scatters as possible, because each one can increase the multiplier during free spins by up to 50x.

• Free Spins

Three or four golden Scatters during normal gameplay reward twelve or twenty extra turns. The multiplier you accrued during the previous bonus is applied to all wins while this special feature lasts.
