It’s no surprise that video games have gotten more popular as the years went on. As technology became better and more people were exposed to these digital delights, the industry grew bigger!

Today, certain games will have tournaments with over $25 million in the prize pool. And despite that, we can’t name that many video game characters who became famous outside of that medium. With one notable exception.

Tombraider Slot Review

Tomb Raider is played on a five reel board, where each reel is three symbols tall. There are a total of fifteen paylines which players can turn on and off at will. To win, collect three or more identical icons in adjacent positions, starting with the leftmost reel. All wins must follow one of the currently active paylines, or else their cash prize won’t be awarded to the online gambler.

Older slots tend to keep their gameplay quite basic. This game is no exception. Available special features include a free spins round with a 3x multiplier, and a pick-and-click bonus. Both of these are great for earning you a good cash prize, don’t get us wrong. But if you want something that doesn’t follow the standard formula to the T, you’re looking at the wrong release.

Theme & Symbols

Lara Croft may have started off as a video game character, but it’s fair to say she’s transcended that status. After the movies starring Angelina Jolie, everyone knew who she was. Hot, British, guns blazing archaeologist that’s smart, stunning and sexy, all in one package! Add her iconic looks into the mixture, and you’ve got the perfect star to be front and center in your brand new slot!

Sadly, Tomb Raider was forced to make a few compromises due to its age. A lack of a background image seems to be one of them. At the very least, Microgaming were smart enough to not leave a completely black screen. But if you can make out any detail from behind the reels, we’ll give you a cookie.

It's all about Lara Croft
It’s all about Lara Croft
But have no fear, because symbol designs are there to save the day! They’re not ideal, either. There’s quite a few colorful playing card royals that we’re really not big fans of. But the icons that are there look really cool! There’s a fierce tiger, Lara squatting down with a gun out, a mysterious artifact and the slot’s logo.

How to Play Tombraider

You play this game on a 5×3 board, with a total of fifteen paylines which can be turned on and off at will. Microgaming’s release has a low-medium volatility and a jackpot worth 2,250x your total stake. As far as top prizes go, that’s a really great one, especially for this kind of variance. But if your senses are tingling that there might be something suspicious there? Well, you’d be right! Half-right, anyhow. Don’t worry, we’ll explain.

Tomb Raider has two special features, and neither are particularly engaging. Free spins are clearly supposed to be the main attraction here, doubly so due to their 3x multiplier. If you’re aiming for that juicy jackpot, it’s the bonus you should get most familiar with. The odds aren’t in your favor; you’d have to get the maximum win and have it boosted by the multiplier. But if you can pull it off? That’s bragging rights that never expire!

Changing your total bet can be done in one of two ways. First, you can increase or decrease the coin value and number of coin per payline in the settings. Alternatively, you can just tap the bet button on the main screen, and pick a wager from there. Players can also turn individual paylines on or off. This allows for a minimum bet of €0.15, and the maximum stake of €75 with each spin.

Bonus Features

We can’t say we were blown away by these special features, but their winning potential is undeniable. Their fun factor, however, left a lot to be desired. There’s a reason many modern slots include so many different mechanics. Just free spins, multipliers and pick-and-clicks tend to be forgettable without something extra added.

  • Free Spins
  • Collect three, four or five Scatters in any position to win ten free spins During the extra turns, a 3x multiplier is applied to all wins. It is possible to retrigger this bonus by finding three or more Scatters while free spins are already being played.

  • Tomb Bonus
  • Find three, four or five golden idols to start this special feature. There’s a total of twelve idols, each one hiding a cash prize beneath. How many you get to take home depends on the number of idols that triggered the bonus. And while you can activate this special feature during free spins, the 3x multiplier does not apply to its winnings. Yes, we’re heartbroken, too!

Tombraider Payouts

Tomb Raider has a low-medium volatility and a jackpot worth 2,250x your total stake. The slot has an RTP of 95.22%, which is below the current industry average of 96%.

Summary

As much as we might wish it was still 2004, it isn’t. Time passes, bringing new and better things. Advancing technology allowed for better visuals, while more customers forced software providers to offer new gameplay. And while this game cannot compete against those trends, it can still offer some good things!

The Positives!

  • This combination of variance and jackpot can be hard to find. Nowadays, developers are doing their best to milk as much profit from their machines as possible. Landing anything close to a jackpot can be a miracle for those releases, but not in Tomb Raider. Here, you feel like you have an actual chance!
  • We owe this fact to the special features. While their gameplay isn’t the most engaging, nobody can argue about how lucrative they are. In an ideal world, we wouldn’t have to pick between these two things. But we do, and this is the slot you go to when you want to try your luck at earning a profit.

The Negatives…

  • While it certainly doesn’t look bad, there’s no arguing the graphic are outdated. The background is almost non-existent, and what few animations are there are quite choppy. Symbol designs could also be a lot better than they currently are.
  • Great wins are something we like. But engaging gameplay is just as important to us, both as reviewers and gamblers.
  • The below average RTP is a product of this game’s time. And yet, it’s a clear disadvantage when it’s competing with releases sitting above the 96% RTP mark.

Is it still worth checking out? We’re giving it a yes, but a very tentative yes. Before you commit any real money, make sure to try the demo version. See if you enjoy how it plays before you try your luck at hitting that 2,250x jackpot.
