From Bally’s studio comes Dragon Spin, a dragon themed slot with amazing special features! Is it the dream game you’ve been looking for? Read OG24’s review to find out!
We have to praise Bally, because they continue to create interesting slots! The giant of physical machines may have lost its dominant position, but they haven’t given up.
Today, we’re taking a look at their dragon themed game with some really fun mechanics! But are those interesting mechanics enough on their own? Or will Bally’s release stumble due to its low payouts?
Dragon Spin Slot Review
Dragon Spin is played on a five reel board, where each reel is three symbols tall. There are a total of thirty fixed paylines, which cannot be turned on or off. To win, collect three or more identical icons in adjacent positions, starting with the leftmost reel. All wins must follow one of thirty active paylines, or else the cash prize won’t be awarded.
We were quite pleased to see how many special features there are! This developer usually does things the other way around. They offer one or two bonuses, but they’re quite lucrative! In this slot, we get mystery stacked reels, a Dragon Spin special feature, and three different free spin rounds! Which one you get is completely random: Raining Wilds, Reel Blast or Persisting Wilds are all on the table.
Theme & Symbols
It’s quite clear this game has a very clear focus on dragons. But we weren’t sure if an oriental theme also applies. The dragons are all serpentine, making them quite cool to look at. The background doesn’t relay an Asian theme to us – but then some symbols, like the Wild, certainly do. For us, this is exactly how we like to see oriental themed releases. Just enough to add a sense of exoticism!
The background image is a large cave full of crystals. The vast majority of the background is cast in a pitch black darkness. What little bit of it we can see is illuminated by the pearl sitting on top of the reels. It’s clearly designed this way to save resources, but it looks really cool. Icon designs are a bit hit or miss for us. We like how the dragons look. Despite sharing that traditional Eastern design, each one looks distinct. The red one takes the cake for looking particularly creepy! Wilds are clearly designed with an oriental themed in mind – red and gold, with Chinese letters on its edges. It all looks great – and the effect is then ruined by the inclusion of playing card royals.
How to Play Dragon Spin
Dragon Spin is played on a 5×3 board with 30 fixed paylines. The slot has a low volatility, with a top prize worth 100x for a five-of-a-kind Wild win. We have to admit, we were quite surprised to come across a Bally game with a low variance. We’re not opposed to it – frequent wins and many bonuses can be quite engaging! But such a low maximum prize might turn off a large number of players.
A large number of the available bonuses are free spins. But to call all of these special features similar would be doing them a disservice. One floods your board with Wilds, while another expands your reels and gives you ninety paylines. And if both of those aren’t to your tastes, you can also get Wilds that stay locked in place! And that’s not even all the available bonuses!
Choosing your wager is quite easy. Simply tap the arrow next to the Stake tab, and you’ll see a drop-down menu open. From here, pick the total bet that suits you best, and start spinning! Online gamblers can wager between €0.30 as a minimum, and €120.00 as the maximum stake.
Bonus Features
Mystery Stacked Reels
Stacked mystery symbols can appear on each reel, which are replaced with two or three random icons when reels spin. You’ll never actually see these symbols, because they always transform before landing.
Dragon Spin Bonus
Collect three or more Scatters to get a spin on the Dragon Wheel! Using the wheel, you pick one of three available free spin special features. All extra turn bonuses offer five free spins as baseline.
Raining Wilds Free Spins
At the beginning of each reel spin, between three to ten Wilds are added to random positions on the board.
Reel Blast Free Spins
This bonus is played on three reel sets, giving you ninety paylines instead of the usual thirty. There’s also a shared Reel Blast center reel that’s spread across reels two, three and four on all three reel sets. This shared center reel will display one massive icon, which can lead to some awesome cash prizes!
Persisting Wilds
In this special feature, you have guaranteed Wilds that will take up random positions on the board and stick there. As you go through each free spins and collect more Wilds, your odds of winning increase.
Dragon Spin Payouts
Dragon Spin has a low volatility, and a jackpot worth 100x your total bet on each spin. The slot’s RTP is 95.94%, which is just below the current industry average of 96%. Certainly within the acceptable boundaries, so we won’t complain.
How much you will enjoy this game solely depends on what you’re after. You won’t find any big wins here: and if you do, they’ll be incredibly rare. But the low volatility and fun special features have created a release that’s a joy to play. It feels like the next bonus is always just around the corner. And while you never win big, you don’t really lose either.
The Positives!
Hands down one of the most engaging slots we’ve had the pleasure of playing recently. Anyone can do multiple free spins bonuses. But making them all interesting over a long gameplay session? That’s talent!
Dragon Spin’s low volatility makes it a very stable game. It’s the sort of release you turn to when you want to grind through a casino bonus. It’s also a good pick for casual players and new gamblers just getting their feet wet.
We’re also quite pleased with the graphics, especially considering the slot’s age. The background and the dragon symbols were our favorites of the bunch!
The Negatives.
Of course, nothing is perfect, and the same applies to the visuals. The absence of animations outside of screen transitions and Wild wins feels like a missed opportunity. It’s certainly something we hope to see fixed in later games.
And while we don’t think every release needs a big win, Dragon Spin skirts it a little too low for our liking. Sure, the end goal is to score multiple free spins with big Wild wins. But they could have afforded to be a bit more generous with the payouts.
If you’re looking to land a huge, life-changing jackpot, you’re in the wrong place. But if you just want to spend a few hours spinning and playing something fun? Then this Bally slot perfectly fits the bill.
