As a NetEnt release with a western theme, it has some big shoes to fill! Can Wild Wild West slot stand out on its own, or is it forever doomed to be the lesser Dead or Alive?
NetEnt sure seems to love their cowboys and sprawling deserts! We certainly won’t complain one bit! Nobody can quite pull off the greatness of a western theme quite like NetEnt can.
But unlike most stories, you’re not a lone sheriff defending the town from bandits. Oh no, in this slot, you are the bandits! With your crew, you’re going to take over a train and make yourselves rich in the process!
Wild Wild West Slot Review
This game is played on a five reel board, with each reel being three symbols high. There are a total of ten fixed paylines, which cannot be turned on or off. To win, simply collect three or more identical icons in adjacent positions, starting with the leftmost reel. All winning combinations must follow one of the ten active paylines, or else the cash prize will not be granted.
Wild Wild West has two special features. One of them are free spins, complete with four different Wilds that can appear in any position on the reels! The other is a Pick-and-Click Bonus, which has you opening golden safes to reveal the loot hidden within! Both special features appear frequently, making them a welcome sight! After all, it’s not so much about taking over the train. It’s about harassing it with constant, small attacks, which come together to form a big pile of loot in the end!
Theme & Symbols
If you were hoping for NetEnt to do something different with the theme, we’ll have to disappoint you. It’s your typical western, delivered in a spectacular fashion! It is unfairly stylish, and the accompanying music track is addictive. We caught ourselves humming it long after we finished playing this release! The developers decision to go for a comic book style also paid off quite well, giving Wild Wild West a timeless feel. Wild Wild West Gameplay The background image is a vast, empty desert. Well, almost empty. There are some tracks in the distance, where you will occasionally see a train zoom past at full speed. They know there’s bandits out there. So if you want to get on board, there’s only one way to do it. Get your rifle and start blasting anyone stupid enough to get in your way! And hidden behind all the cacti and small shrubs, it really makes you feel like you’re a bandit on a stakeout. Just waiting for the right moment to strike and get your loot!
We really like the human symbols! Each one of them has a distinct design that hints at each character’s personality and history. Despite being the youngest of the bunch, the blonde man clearly likes a good fight, thanks to his big scar. The old, experienced bandit clearly has a screw or ten loose judging by his deranged smile. It’s a shame that the accompanying icons are simple playing card icons.
How to Play Wild Wild West
You play this slot on a 5×3 board with 10 fixed paylines. There’s no turning individual paylines on or off to adjust your total bet, either. Not that you’d really want to turn any off in the first place, if we’re honest. 10 paylines is too low for our liking. Fortunately, NetEnt compensates players through the special features it offers.
There’s only two of them, but they have a major impact on the gameplay! It helps that they appear quite frequently, so you’re never far from your next free spins round. Outside of the extra rounds, there’s really not much to do. Sure, the pick and click bonus will occasionally appear, but it’s completely random. You pick your prize, and continue spinning. We would have liked at least one more bonus to keep things interesting!
At the very least, we can say this game is fair. It only offers 10 fixed paylines, but it only asks for €0.10 per spin as a minimum stake. We’re sure casual online gamblers will be quite pleased with this development! For high rollers, your maximum wager is only €100 for each spin. Not bad by any means, but you can’t accomplish much with a 500x jackpot. Stop the Wheel for Wilds during Free Spins
Wild Wild West Bonus Features
Some releases are defined by their special features. And Wild Wild West is absolutely one of them! Whether this is a good or a bad thing, we’ll leave up to you, the player, to decide for yourself. All we can do is give you the facts, as they are!
Free Spins
Collect three, four or five Scatters to win ten, twenty or thirty extra turns, respectively. After the bonus is activated, gamblers get to spin a wheel which determines what Wild they get. There are four Wilds in total:
• Regular Wild – the same Wild you’ve seen during normal gameplay. • Expanding Wild – this Wild will cover the entirety of the reel it landed on. • 2x Multiplier Wild – When part of a win, this Wild will double the cash prize. • Spreading Wild – This Wild turns one adjacent into another Wild.
During free spins, an overlay Wild is guaranteed to appear on the first, second or third reel on every spin. This Wild will work identically to Wilds that appear randomly.
Pick and Click
Collect three golden safe bonus icons in the first, third and fifth reel. Select one of them to reveal a cash prize worth between 5x to 50x your total stake. This special feature can only be activated during normal gameplay. No robbing safes during free spins, we’re afraid!
Payouts
The slot has a low-medium volatility and a jackpot worth 500x on each spin. The game’s RTP is 96.74%, which is almost a whole percentage point higher than the current industry average.
From the moment NetEnt decided on a western theme, they condemned their release to live in the shadow of Dead or Alive. Wisely, they decided to make it a different beast all together rather than attempting to make a spiritual successor. But is Wild Wild West able to stand on its own two legs as a competent slot?
The Positives!
You know the symbols are fantastic when we’re praising them, of all people. We hope to see more human icons like these from the developer. Artwork that tell a story in a single glance!
The fast-paced, low-medium variance is great for casual and mid-range players. Special features appear frequently, which makes gameplay quite engaging! If you like getting lots of wins instead of one big jackpot, this is the slot for you.
The Negatives..
The graphics as a whole could use some more work. There was a distinct absence of interesting animations outside of free spins. We have high expectations of NetEnt games, and this one failed to meet them all.
At 500x, your jackpot is just too low to really make a difference. Unless you’re some sort of gambling god and can net two or three in a row, there’s not much to get excited about.
Our end verdict for Wild Wild West is that it’s alright. Neither good nor bad, it’s a fun way to pass the time. But if you want a western with serious wins, try Dead or Alive, or its sequel, Dead or Alive 2.
