The legend of King Arthur is one people are quite familiar with. Characters that are part of his mythos have become common knowledge. The wizard Merlin, the knight Lancelot, the fair Guinevere whose name we can never spell right.
Seeing all these familiar faces grace Play’n Go’s latest slot was a nice gesture. But can this game produce a win worthy of Arthurian legend?
The Sword and the Grail Slot Review
A five reel board with 20 fixed paylines awaits you in this release. The graphics look good, but aren’t mind-blowing. Compare this to Ankh of Anubis, and you immediately see the difference. The animation for the background flames just feel a little too choppy. Which is weird, since all the other animations are perfectly fine. If we had to guess, we’d assume the developers went this route to conserve resources. Not that The Sword and the Grail really needs it!
For the most part, the symbol designs suit the time period. Playing card royals were craftily disguised as coins to help them fit the theme better. On the board, they are joined by King Arthur, the redheaded Guinevere, the wise Merlin and the adventurous Lancelot. The artists clearly put a lot of effort into making each legend look quite distinct. Though Lancelot looks a little weird, for a reason we can’t quite put into words. Some slots revel in creating a complex web of bonuses. That’s not on offer here, though. This game has two special features. First is the Wild, which can randomly appear with a 2x, 5x, 10x or a 100x multiplier. No, that last one isn’t a typo! Alternatively, you can guarantee the multiplier size by triggering the free spins. As you collect extra Scatters during the special feature, you can unlock extra spins and increase the multiplier until the bonus ends.
How to Play The Sword and the Grail
You play this Play’n Go release on a 5×3 board with 20 total paylines. To win, collect three or more identical icons in adjacent positions, starting with the leftmost reel. Players can wager between $0.10 and $100 on each spin. This is an excellent betting spread, which will appeal to both high rollers and casual punters. The maximum payout for The Sword and the Grail is 10,000x your total stake. If you like these numbers just visit an online casino that offer this videoslot.
The key to scoring that amazing prize lies in the two special features. So let’s take a closer look at them, shall we?
Above the reels, you’ll see a sheathed sword beneath the multiplier indicator. Every now and then, the sword will randomly shift to the right. Depending on the sword’s position, all Wilds on that spin will have a multiplier attached. If the Wild completes a win while the multiplier is active, that win will be increased accordingly.
Collect three or more Excalibur Scatters to win five free spins. While extra turns are active, your Wild multiplier is always set to 2x. You can progress it further by collecting additional Scatters! You need six Scatters (including the swords that triggered the free spins) to win five more free spins and a 5x multiplier Wild. You unlock a higher wild Multiplier and more free spins by collecting eleven and eighteen swords, respectively.
While definitely above average, The Sword and the Grail lacks a little extra to win us over. The top prize and high volatility are more than enough to earn it our seal of approval. But the theme and graphics aren’t quite as good as their other slots. One more special feature is needed to make this game more exciting. It’s good, but it can be better.
High volatility action with a 10,000x jackpot
100x multiplier Wilds are awesome for scoring wins
Excellent choice of theme
Graphics can be improved
One more bonus would add a bit of gameplay diversity
While not the best Play’n Go ever created, it’s still well worth checking out. That jackpot won’t win itself!
