Glimmering lights and a peaceful soundtrack await you in Dragon Shrine slot! But these are little more than a warm-up act for what you really want. A game with re-spins, free spins and lots of big wins!
Anyone who’s a long time reader of our website will know we’re not big on Chinese themed slots. After the initial rush to capture that new market, we’re just burned out on it.
So you’d think this game would score a few points with us. As much as we may be tired of seeing dragons and red-gold lanterns, we dislike lazy software providers a lot more. And that’s exactly what Quickspin hoped to pull off here.
Dragon Shrine Slot Review
Dragon Shrine is played on a five reel board. The first and fifth reels are three symbols tall, while the second, third and fourth are four icons high. There are a total of 40 paylines, which cannot be turned on or off. To win, collect three or more identical symbols in adjacent positions, starting with the leftmost reel. All wins must follow one of the currently active paylines, or the cash prize won’t be awarded to the player.
Quickspin’s release also includes two fun and lucrative special features for online gamblers to enjoy! First on the list is the Dragon Stack Re-spins. All dragon and Wild icons are locked in place, and three re-spins are played. Any additional dragons or Wilds also become sticky, with line wins granted at the end of the re-spins. There’s also a free spins round with potentially mirrored stacked dragons on reels one and five.
Theme & Symbols
Look, we understand developers are human too. Sometimes, you can’t come up with a good way to execute an idea you had in mind. But that’s when you shelve it for later and try something different. This weird half-here, half-there theme currently offered by Dragon Shrine is just boring. It comes across as a weird mishmash between bland modern visuals and traditional Chinese graphics.
We’re not sure if we like the background image or not. We do like the myriad of different colors and the floating hexagons that dominate the background. But while it looks cool, it doesn’t really fit with the Chinese theme this slot is going for. If they wanted a more modern rendition, they could have gone with a Chinese city of some kind.
Outside of the Dragon symbol and the shrine Bonus icon, none of the other symbol designs embrace the theme either. The Wild and playing card royals use a font that somewhat resembles the Chinese script. But then you have the four diamond icons that have as much to do with a Chinese theme as a Belgian waffle. Which is to say, absolutely nothing at all.
How to Play Dragon Shrine
You play this game on a 5×3 board, where the first and fifth reel are three symbols tall, and the second, third and fourth are four icons tall. There are 40 fixed paylines that run through this somewhat unique reel structure. The slot has a medium variance and a jackpot worth 871x your total stake. A cool bonus, but one you’re unlikely to win without special features helping you out.
The game makes use of two bonuses to draw players in. The Dragon Stack re-spins can create some really great winning combinations, but they’re quite rare! Your best bet for landing a satisfying win is to rely on the free spins round. It can grant some satisfying wins, and it enhances the Dragon Stack re-spins if they do occur.
Changing your bet is quite simple in Quickspin’s release. Tap the Total Bet button to reveal a drop down menu of available wagers. Select whichever suits you best between the €0.20 and €80 maximum stake. And when you’re all set-up, you can start spinning for a shot at Dragon Shrine’s maximum win.
You can try the slot for free on this page, but if you want to play for real money you must open an account at an online casino. There are some casinos we recommend for you. You find them in the section above.
Dragon Stack Re-spins
If a full stack of dragon symbols appear in the first reel, three re-spins are awarded to the player. During this special feature, all dragons and Wilds are locked in place while re-spins are played. After three re-spins, line wins are evaluated for all the collected dragon icons and Wilds.
Three Scatters on a single spin in any position earns you ten free spins. During the extra turns, all wins pay both ways, instead of just left to right! In addition, triggering the Dragon Stack Re-spins can now be done from reel one or five. Furthermore, the stack of dragon symbols will be duplicated on the opposite reel!
Dragon Shrine Payouts
Dragon Shrine has a medium volatility, and a jackpot worth 871x your total stake. The slot’s RTP is 96.55%, which is above the current industry average.
If we had to pick a word to describe this game, it would probably be average. It feels more like Quickspin was experimenting with the mechanics rather than fully committing to a release. It’s a far cry from their best, like we have seen in Big Bad Wolf and The Wild Chase. But for a few hours of fun and potential profits, it gets the job done. The Positives!
Dragon Shrine has some really cool special features. The re-spins round can be quite lucrative, especially if you get lucky with the positions of dragons and Wilds. And free spins further enhancing the re-spins by ensuring both reels one and five are filled with dragons? Someone hold us, we’re swooning!
The slot is also the perfect example on how to do medium variance properly. It perfectly blends frequent special features and decent prizes into a fun and engaging game.
We can’t get past the theme. While Quickspin’s release looks good to alright, the absence of a proper theme feels weird. The software provider should have fully committed to a traditional Chinese theme, or went all in on the generic look the rest of Dragon Shrine has. This neither here nor there look doesn’t work well.
We don’t think we can recommend this slot. It hasn’t captured our imagination in the same way The Wild Chase has. Compared to other Quickspin games, it still has a long way to go.
