Sherlock Holmes as a character has become synonymous with the word detective. With his assistant Watson, he has cracked many cases. As a result, he remains one of the most popular characters in literature to this day!

And today, Holmes finally receives rightful recognition for his work. He gets his very own slot, created by the talented team at Yggdrasil!

Holmes and the Stolen Stones Slot Review

Holmes and the Stolen Stones is played on a five reel board, where each reel is three symbols tall. There are a total of twenty paylines that cannot be turned on or off at will. Three or more identical icons in adjacent positions, starting with the leftmost reel will grant a win. That said, all wins have to follow one of twenty active paylines, or else the cash prize won’t be awarded.

We quite like the available special features. They don’t really give off a detective vibe, but they’re quite engaging. There’s a pick-and-click bonus where you uncover cash prizes and diamonds. Then, there’s a free spins round that can be triggered in two different ways! Finally, there are five progressive jackpots, triggered when enough diamonds are collected on the playing field.

Theme & Symbols

We used to read a lot of Sherlock Holmes when we were younger, and playing this game brought back many fond memories. Sadly, it doesn’t use the license as well as it could. Sherlock is little more than a recognizable face they put on the cover to get you to click on it. There were some attempts to make it feel like a detective story. But those efforts failed to pan out in the end, much to the detriment of this Yggdrasil release.

The background image shows two sets of doors. Keep an eye out for the rightmost one, because when it opens, that means free spins are active! Another background is used while the pick-and-click bonus is played, which was a nice touch on Yggdrasil’s part. You can tell the developers went out of their way to create a visually appealing slot.

Holmes and the Stolen Stones Gameplay
Holmes and the Stolen Stones Gameplay
Symbol design in Holmes and the Stolen Stones is quite good. We’re not huge fan of the playing card icons, for example. Clubs, diamonds, hearts and spades are filler symbols, no matter how much bling developers put on them. In contrast, all other icons do look awesome! It really ties the whole game together. You could even make out the stories’ basic elements just by looking at the reels and using your imagination.

How to Play Holmes and the Stolen Stones

Yggdrasil’s release is played on a 5×3 board with 20 fixed paylines. It even comes with a medium volatility, balancing big wins and fun gameplay. We can’t stress how important this is to us as players. You have to be offering a really good jackpot if it’s locked behind an unbearable grind. Something like this slot, which offers the best of both worlds is the way to go.

Part of making Holmes and the Stolen Stones fun is by adding in some thrilling special features! The pick-and-click bonus usually won’t result in the best wins possible. But it’s quite useful as a boost for the other special features, especially since you can win shards of diamonds. The same shards you need to win free spins! In turn, you’ll need free spins to have a shot at the progressive jackpots. It all ties back together!

Credit where it’s due, the game keeps changing your total bet simple. You change your coin value, and it automatically updates your wager. You can’t turn individual paylines on or off. Just tap the plus and minus keys until you get the stake that best suits you, and start spinning! Gamblers can bet between €0.20 and €40 on every spin. It’s an okay betting spread. Nothing we’ll brag to our friends about – unlike the five jackpots!

Bonus Features

We quite like special features that increase your wins in the next bonus. So when this Yggdrasil release promised exactly that, we knew we had to try it. It’s not quite as expansive as we’d like, but it’s better than nothing.

  • Bonus Game
  • Collect three, four or five bonus symbols to win this special feature. You get a certain number of picks, which allow you to dig through crates. In them, you can find cash prizes or diamond shards. If you find diamond shards, they are added to your collection during normal gameplay. The bonus ends when players come across the smoke bomb icon.

  • Diamond Meters
  • Above each reel is a diamond meter. Each time a diamond or diamond shard appears, it fills the meter above its reel by one.

  • Free Spins
  • There are two ways you can win free spins. First is to land three or more Scatters. The second method needs you to collect five diamond shards of the same color. Either way, you get ten free spins with a 3x multiplier to all line wins.

  • Progressive Jackpots
  • During free spins, full diamond symbols will appear on the playing field. When one lands, it fills the diamond meter above the reel it landed on. Collect five diamonds and fill a meter to win its associated jackpot.

Summary

Yggdrasil games have a fun habit of exceeding our expectations in the best of ways. We knew what to expect when we first started it, and we still had a blast! It does so many things right, it would take us a while to write it all up. If only we could somehow create a shorter version, preferably in list format.

The Positives!

  • The developer always created good looking releases, and Holmes and the Stolen Stones is no exception. You can see all the fluid animations in both background and symbols. On top of that, we get a special background image that’s only visible during a bonus. It’s that extra bit of effort that this slot used to win us over.
  • Special features don’t give us anything new. But they execute a tried-and-true concept masterfully! Pick-and-click bonuses never captured our imaginations much. But by enhancing your future free spins through them, Yggdrasil forces you to play attention!
  • Progressive jackpots have always been the fantasy of many gamblers, and for good reason! They exceed any traditional top prize, and are usually big enough to make headlines. Having five of them in a single game? You bet we’re excited!
  • Yggdrasil’s release has a medium volatility and an RTP that’s above the average.

The Negatives

  • Your fixed jackpot could be a lot better. Now, the progressive jackpots shield it from most of the criticism we can offer here. But 600x seems to be on the low side, especially when you compare it to similar releases.

We had a blast playing Holmes and the Stolen Stones, and we’re more than happy to recommend it. If you like chasing progressive jackpots and fun bonuses, then you may be looking at one of your new favorite slots!
