The Spanish Armada

Despite controlling almost half of the new world at some point, Spain usually doesn’t get much attention in the iGaming space. Belatra seeks to right that wrong with The Spanish Armada slot, which brings their naval might to assist in hitting jackpots!

Everyone’s heard of France’s badass history, or how the sun never sets on the British Empire. But Spain, despite holding the strongest colonial empire of them all, has fallen by the wayside.

That doesn’t mean they didn’t have their glory moments. At some point, the Spanish navy was just as fierce and terrifying to face off against as the British one was! And we’ll be able to see its might in full glory playing this slot.

The Spanish Armada Slot Review

The Spanish Armada has a five reel board, where each reel is four symbols tall. There are a total of one hundred paylines, which only pay from left to right. To win, collect three or more identical icons in adjacent positions, starting with the leftmost reel. All wins must follow one of the currently active paylines, or else they won’t count.

Find three or more Scatters to win a free spins round with sticky Wilds! You can get between three to ten Wilds on the initial activation, along with any Wilds that appear afterwards. The more Wilds you have, the easier it will be to score lots of wins! And, as is a staple of Belatra’s games, there’s two types of gamble bonuses, as well as the lucky wheel.

Theme & Symbols

We have to admire the developers’ choice of theme. They decided to base their release on the historical Spanish Armada, which was supposed to invade England. What would follow was a battle for the history books! Francis Drake and the Duke of Medina Sidonia would face off in a battle of wits. The English would eventually beat back the Armada, organizing their naval force to fight the Spanish on their home turf.

It’s a cool idea, and we really like it, but the graphics sell the event short. The slot was originally a physical machine, so we can forgive the outdated visuals somewhat. If Belatra wanted to make sure this game succeeded, they could have touched up the graphics before launching it online. As it stands, we can see a great deal of players dismissing it outright.

Symbol designs are all unique artwork; no boring playing card royals here! Instead, all the icons are things you’d see with the actual armada. Barrels, swords, ship steering wheels, lots of coins, massive ships, and the mighty fleet itself! Gamblers will also find Francis Drake and Duke of Medina Sidonia, as the two leaders of the 1588 battle.

How do You Play The Spanish Armada?

Belatra’s release is played on a 5×4 board, with a total of 100 fixed paylines. We don’t have any official information on the slot’s volatility. Our educated guess plants it at medium volatility, but remember that it is just a guess. Only the developers know the real variance of The Spanish Armada, and they’re not talking.

This may be the simplest batch of special features a Belatra game ever offered! They usually go for something a bit more outlandish, as Lucky Drink shows. We like innovation a lot, but it’s also nice to relax with something familiar, too. There’s a reason free spins are a staple in the iGaming industry: everybody loves them! Especially when you pair them with sticky Wilds that can boost your wins.

Changing your total bet is quite simple. Tap the plus and minus buttons until you get the wager you’re comfortable with, and start spinning. It’s all great, except that this release only shows things in coins. If you want to see how much you’re actually spending, you’ll have to watch your online casino balance.

Bonus Features

  • Free Spins
  • Collect three or more Scatters to win seven free spins. Before any of the extra turns play, between three to ten Wilds are added to the board. These Wilds, and all Wilds that come after them become locked in place. Sticky Wilds remain locked in their position until free spins end.

  • Card Double
  • You have to pick between four face-down cards. The end goal is getting a higher value card than the current face-up card held by the dealer. Doing this successfully doubles your win, but guessing wrong takes away all your wins.

  • Red-Or-Black
  • Players see a single face-down card, and are asked to guess its color or suite. Guessing the color correctly earns you a 2x multiplier, and picking the right suite brings that up to 4x! However, one wrong guess means all your wins are forfeited.

  • Jackpot Wheel of Fortune
  • Gamblers have to collect 2000 JP points to trigger this bonus. You get some points with each bet, and bigger stakes increase the number of points you get. Once 2000 points have been collected, you get a cash prize, whose value varies on what you draw from the wheel.

Payouts

We don’t know The Spanish Armada’s official variance, but we think it has a medium volatility with a 250,000 coin jackpot. The software provider has not revealed any RTP information, which automatically prevents us from recommending this slot.

Summary

Unlike Belatra’s other ventures, this one plays it safe. It uses familiar special features, and has a decent jackpot that’ll entice players to try it out. The game is fun to play, but lacks the visual fidelity to make it into the big leagues. So what are our thoughts on it?

The Positives!

  • It’s nice to see some free spins again after such a long time. They appear frequently enough, and are further enhanced through the sticky Wilds mechanic.
  • Every online gambler dreams of landing a big win. The ones who say they don’t are probably lying. So when this release sails up on its big Spanish boat and offers a jackpot worth 250,000 coins? We imagine lots of people will try and snag it!

The Negatives…

  • Even giving The Spanish Armada leniency for being a physical machine, it’s still too outdated for our liking. If the developers want this slot to succeed, they have to improve the graphics.
  • The game does not reveal any RTP information, which means we cannot recommend it to our readers.

We really liked this release. It didn’t use an offensive theme, and its gameplay was fun. However, until Belatra reveals its RTP, we cannot endorse this slot, even if we enjoyed it.
