Poker and slots together? What kind of oddity is this? We were quite curious when this game was first announced. After all, it sounded like Red Tiger Gaming was planning to create something brand new!

However, as more details came out, we eventually lost interest. It would be a release like any other, just wearing the PokerStars brand as its theme. After playing it for ourselves, we can say that our opinion has changed.

Stars Luck Slot Review

Stars Luck is played on a five reel board, where each reel is three symbols tall. There are a total of ten fixed paylines, which cannot be turned on or off. However, these paylines are unique, since they can from any position, not just left to right. To win, collect three or more identical icons in adjacent positions. These wins can start from any position. With the leftmost reel, the rightmost reel, or even in the middle of the reels!

This would be a cool bonus in itself, but this slot keeps going! It has these cool mystery symbols that transform to reveal one of the icons from the paytable. Under the right circumstances, this can turn a dead spin into a winning one! The floodlights on the side of the reels can add Mystery Chips, or even flip the chips again for a shot at bigger wins! And if that’s not enough, the mystery symbol can appear as a massive 3×3 icon!

Theme & Symbols

We had hoped this game would follow the lead of Betsoft’s Good Girl Bad Girl. How could would it be to combine poker gameplay elements into this Red Tiger Gaming release? It would be unlike anything currently on the market, and would undoubtedly draw a lot of players in to at least try it. Sadly, the software provider went for the safer version. We can’t say we fault them for it, but we lament the missed opportunity.

Stars Luck has a plain background image. It’s set on a dark stage, with floodlights turning on and off. These lights will all turn on when one of the special features is triggered. But besides that, the image remains black and static. It looks stylish, but we can’t say we’re impressed. We know Red Tiger Gaming can do a lot better.

Symbol designs are a mixture of PokerStars icons and playing card royals. Even if you’re not their fan, you’ll be able to recognize most of the symbols. They’re not the icons we have a problem with. That role, as always, falls to the playing card royals. We’d dislike them less if the royals were drawn on top of cards. Then, it would be poker related and it’d seem like some effort was put into the symbols.

How to Play Stars Luck

The slot has a 5×3 board with 10 fixed paylines, which can pay from either side of the reels, or in the middle. The game has a medium variance and a jackpot worth 2000x your total bet. It’s an awesome top prize, though it will require a lot of luck on your part. Either by snagging a five-of-a-kind win with the highest paying icon by yourself, which is less likely. Or making use of the bonus to make that awesome prize far more likely!

Of course, having everything revolve around mystery symbols and the icons they reveal can be both a blessing and a curse. As it’s the only real special feature available in this game, it has to appear frequently to keep gamblers at an online casino entertained. Because of that, it’s far less likely to grant you any kind of substantial prize. If you’re gunning for the jackpot we mentioned above, be forewarned. You’ve got a long gameplay session ahead of you.

Changing your bet is as satisfying simple as always. Click the Stake button, scroll up and down through the drop-down menu, and pick your favorite wager! In this Red Tiger Gaming release, players can bet between €0.20 and €40 with each spin. Asking for double the usual amount will no doubt drive away some casual online gamblers. But everyone else should be quite pleased with the wager spread!

Bonus Features

  • Mystery Chips
  • Stars Luck’s very own mystery symbol! It can land on the reels with any spin, or when triggered by the floodlights. After appearing, all chips will transform, becoming one of the icons from the paytable. All chips will always become the same symbol.

  • Mega Chip
  • Occasionally, you’ll see a large chip occupying a 3×3 space. When it lands fully or partially on the board, it breaks up into smaller chips. Apart from offering an increased chance at big wins, it behaves exactly the same as regular mystery icons.

  • Floodlights
  • This bonus randomly activates, and adds Mystery Chips to the reels.

  • Spotlights
  • Not to be confused with Floodlights! This special feature triggers randomly, and forces the mystery symbol to flip again, granting a bigger win!

    Payouts

The slot has a medium volatility and a jackpot worth 2000x your total bet. The game’s RTP is 96.16%, which is slightly more than the current industry average!

Summary

While our initial expectations for this release weren’t met, we can’t say we hold it against Stars Luck. The developer succeeded in creating an interesting slot even without adding poker mechanics into the mix. And while it’ll always be in the back of our heads, that’s not why you’re here for. You want to know if this game is worth your time and money. And our answer to that is…

The Positives!

  • Red Tiger Gaming is the master of making simple special features look and feel enticing. Any other software provider would struggle making a release that uses just mystery icons, and no free spins or Wilds.
  • It also offers a good jackpot for its volatility. Medium variance and a 2000x top prize? Sign us up right now!

The Negatives…

  • We’re not big fans of the graphics. They can look fine at times, but they’re rather bland for the vast majority of your playtime. We know for a fact Red Tiger Gaming can do a lot better than this. And that’s why we demand better.

Yes, we still would recommend Stars Luck to anyone who’s interested in it. It’s not as wholehearted of a recommendation as we gave Mega Dragon. But if you don’t mind the somewhat boring visuals, we think you’ll have fun playing this slot.
