One thing we really like about Play’n Go is their ability to deliver thematically interesting slots. They’ve got a talent for bringing a game world to life in a way few other developers can.
But this release is impressive even according to their standard! Traveling across worlds with a band of magical dwarves? Sign us up right away!
Gemix Slot Review
Gemix is played on a seven reel board, where each reel is seven symbols tall. Rather than using paylines, the slot has Cluster Pays. Five or more identical icons in adjacent positions in any position will grant a win. Winning symbols are then removed from the playing field, and new ones fall to take their place.
There are four bonuses that can be randomly granted for filling the meter once. If you succeed in charging the meter twice without activating one of the four special features, you get a 3x multiplier. Finally, players can clear patterns in playing fields to level up and advance to different worlds! There’s more to this than just a visual change, as each world has its own unique Wild effect.
Theme & Symbols
We can’t say that this game won us on graphics alone. Don’t get us wrong, Play’n Go know how to make a pretty release! But it was more the charm of the whole thing that swept us off our feet. The developers went through the extra effort to design multiple worlds, and to create some gorgeously fluid animations!
There are three different worlds in total, and each one has a different background image. You’ll see colorful, fairy tale kingdoms, cozy homes in a forested area, and an ominous underground entrance glowing bright green! None of these background have any individual animations, unfortunately.
Icon designs are something we both like and dislike. It’s all a bunch of geometric shapes in different colors, which is hardly exciting. But when you look at all the little details Play’n Go added to Gemix’s symbols, you can’t help but love them. Things are also made a bit better with three different Wild icons.
How to Play Gemix
You play this slot on a 7×7 board with Cluster pays instead of traditional paylines. The game has a medium variance and a maximum cash prize worth 3000x your total stake. Thanks to the cascading reels and cluster pays, your odds of hitting 1000x your wager aren’t that bad. But to score the jackpot, you also have to hit the 3x multiplier.
Which may sound simple, but we can assure you, it’s anything but. To get it, you have to score multiple consecutive wins – no pauses allowed! And on top of that, you have to hope you’ve gotten a fifteen symbol star win when the multiplier activates. Online gamblers can also look forward to three different Wilds, depending on what world you’re on.
Changing your bet means you have to go into the menu to find your ideal wager. It’s a bit annoying, and something we hope Play’n Go doesn’t retain for their future games. Once there, you simply pull the Bet slider left or right to find your ideal stake. This means you can bet as little as €0.50 to €100 on each spin.
After each winning spin, icons which were part of that win will disappear. Existing symbols will fall down to take their place, while brand new ones appear on top of the screen. This allows lucky players to score multiple consecutive wins for the price of a single spin.
Winning on twenty symbols will charge the crystal once. On the next non-winning spin, it will trigger one of four mini-bonuses:
• Nova Blast: One icon explodes, destroying all adjacent symbols.
• Crystal Warp: One icon is targeted. Every symbol of that color are warped to other icons.
• Light Beam: One symbol shoots out light beams. Icons hit by this beam are then transformed into other symbols.
• Chain Lightning: Two corner icons are connected with chain lightning. All symbols this lightning hits are transformed into one of the two corner icons.
Winning on forty or more symbols before activating any of the Crystal Charge special features grants a 3x multiplier.
Each world has a set of different patterns which you need to clear. You clear these patterns by winning on top of the overlaid reels. Once the pattern is cleared, that level is counted as a win. Once you win enough levels, you swap into a different world. Each world also has a different Wild. These include:
• Up to ten Wilds being added on a non-winning round.
• A Wild that spreads from edge to edge on non-winning round.
• Up to eight sticky Wilds created in different positions on a non-winning round.
Gemix has a medium volatility and a jackpot worth 3000x your total bet. The slot has a 96.75% RTP, which is above the current industry average of 96%.
It’s not often that we have the pleasure of playing something fun and enjoyable like this game. It’s so full of little visual effects and interesting bonuses that it can be difficult to put down. You can truly feel the passion the developers had for this release! But did that translate into a good slot?
World hopping magical dwarves using their arcane arts to score you big wins? That’s a theme we can always get behind! The sheer absurdity of it all instantly made it a favorite for us.
Visuals are also quite impressive, considering Gemix is an older game. It’s still just as satisfying to watch those animations play out as it was all those years ago.
Special features also aren’t afraid of experimenting! Different worlds, cascading reels and cluster pays are all awesome additions to gameplay. It makes this release feel more like a proper mobile game than a regular slot.
Symbols borrowing designs that have been used in just about every game felt a bit bland.
The absence of free spins also felt like a missed opportunity.
We want to stress that while there are flaws, they’re minor compared to the good things. If you haven’t tried Gemix before, we thoroughly recommend playing it for yourself.
